American Military Operation on Venezuela Fuels Anxieties of Potential Danish Territory Acquisition.

The recent US-led military action in the South American nation and the seizure of its president have sparked apprehension regarding America's ambitions on Greenland. Followers of the former president's political movement have reportedly focused on the vast island following the events in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Messages and Diplomatic Backlash

Merely hours following the initiation of the Caracas operation, a well-known right-wing commentator, who is married to a senior presidential aide, posted a suggestive map. The picture depicted Greenland covered in the American flag, with the cryptic message: "SOON."

This overt suggestion to claim the mineral-rich land, which is a part of the NATO alliance, provoked swift and strong criticism from Denmark's officials.

"We are strong partners and should continue to cooperate as such. US security is also Greenland’s and our security," declared the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "Our nation and the United States collaborate to ensure security in the Arctic."

The ambassador additionally pointed out that the kingdom had significantly increased its military budget this year, earmarking a large sum specifically for Arctic and regional defence. "And yes, we expect complete respect for the territorial integrity of the our realm," he added.

Political Appointments and Strategic Goals

The tensions were further exacerbated by the previous naming of a US state governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The appointee had publicly thanked the commander-in-chief, saying it was an "privilege" to work in a unpaid capacity to "bring Greenland into the US."

Following the military action in Venezuela, this representative praised the administration's actions, connecting it to the wider "fight against narcotics."

Ever since returning to office, the US president has repeatedly alarmed European partners with his expressed interest in Greenland. The island is viewed as critically strategic for national security and future resource extraction. It currently hosts the northernmost US military base.

Leaving the Door Open to Military Action

In a notable television appearance, the leader declined to exclude the resorting to military force to acquire Greenland. This position comes amid intensifying great-power competition in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He described Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for global security."

Growing Friction and Local Opposition

In reaction to this constant "rhetoric" of threats, Danish intelligence service took the unprecedented step last month of classifying the United States as a "potential threat."

The leaders of both Greenland delivered a joint and forceful rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot take over other countries."

Surveys in Greenland reveals a nuanced sentiment. While a overwhelming percentage of the territory's inhabitants seek independence from Denmark, there is also little to no appetite to become part of the United States. The island has had the option to seek independence for many years.

Expert Assessment: A Plausible Threat?

Some analysts are increasingly re-evaluating the likelihood of such a move. One policy director specializing in defence admitted she had once dismissed the rhetoric but was "now not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to station a few hundred or a couple thousand soldiers on Greenland, and it's not clear to me which power could intervene about it," she concluded.
