British Broadcasting Corporation Gaza Programme Considered a 'Significant' Infringement of Broadcasting Regulations, Says Ofcom

The British broadcaster was found to have committed a "serious breach" of media regulations by omitting to mention that the narrator of a programme about the Gaza situation was the offspring of a Hamas official, according to UK media regulator Ofcom.

An investigation by the media regulator into the documentary titled Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has found that the programme was "significantly deceptive".

The BBC's director general had previously apologised, saying there had been "a major oversight in relation to accuracy".

The authority has ordered the corporation to transmit a evening statement about its decisions.

"Since this amounts to a serious breach of our code, we are directing the broadcaster to air a message of our determinations against it on BBC2 at nine o'clock in the evening, with a schedule to be finalised," the regulator stated.

'Risk to Undermine Confidence'

The watchdog's announcement stated: "Our investigation concluded that the programme's omission to reveal that the narrator's father occupied a role in the Hamas-administered government was materially misleading.

"This implied that the viewers did not have critical information which may have been extremely pertinent to their evaluation of the narrator and the information he provided.

"Confidence is at the heart of the relationship between a television network and its public, particularly for a national broadcasting corporation such as the BBC.

"This oversight had the potential to damage the exceptionally strong degrees of trust that audiences would have put in a BBC factual programme about the conflict in Gaza."

The film was removed from the online platform in February after the narrator's personal associations were revealed, and in this past July an corporation's own inquiry determined it violated the broadcaster's editorial guidelines on truthfulness.

A representative for the broadcaster stated: "The regulator's decision is in accordance with the findings of the corporation's inquiry, that there was a significant failing in the film in relation to the BBC's Editorial Guidelines on factual correctness, which aligns with clause 2.2 of the authority's broadcasting regulations.

"We issued an apology for this and we agree with the regulator's ruling in complete. We will adhere to the sanction as soon as the schedule and wording are confirmed."
