Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant explosions shaking Tehran, following statements from Israel that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were heard in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, two plumes of thick smoke were observed billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, though it did not initially provide further details.
Context: Rising Strains and Recent Developments
This event takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased tensions in the region. Major events preceding this attack involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the United States and Iran on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with suggestions of further discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They dismissed assertions about missile development and protest deaths as unfounded.
The situation is fluid, with further updates anticipated as events unfold.
