Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
