Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in September and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.
This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the potential of his move to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also asked that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.
The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
